Backbends

A few weeks ago I stood from UD to my own surprise. Then it left me for a while…I was accepting of it and didn’t dwell. This weekend it came back. So, I tried it a few times to be sure and I think it is truly here to stay.

Feet are still yucky but you’ve gotta start somewhere (nice little dance at the top…then my husband comes charging through…these are the distractions I live with while trying to work on my backbends…le sigh). I managed to do it without the dance later but didn’t catch it on film.

I also did some dropping back to the liberator (affectionately renamed Liberace) and coming back up from same.

I then tried to come out a little further from the liberator, to have less of a prop on landing. I came out too far, realized this on the hangback and lost my nerve going back. I'm a little disappointed I didn't go for it as watching this it seems a lot closer than it felt. Maybe if I bring my Manduka home from the studio, it would protect my wrists better than my travel mat. Then I might have the confidence to do it sans Liberace.

Nice coming up, quite smooth. I filmed one today as well, too much rocking back and forth on mine and my dance was forward as opposed to backwards. Wish I'd had one of your liberators when i was learning to drop back, such and excellent idea.

Word veri is knogged

Hi Grimmly – thanks, I was surprised and happy to see it back again! I got the wedge mat idea from Karen at donutszenmom, she wrote about her vinyl sand dune a few months back and that’s when I started looking for one (bit of a mission to find in Canada though). I also use it to practice pincha (as a higher launchpad for the feet), and to recline in LBH stretches. It’s a great prop.

Okay, when I looked for "liberator" online, I came up with a sex prop. Is that what you got? If so, I am highly amused. This makes me look at my gumnastics wedge in a whole new light... :-)

The dropbacks look good -- very light and controlled!

Hi Karen – in hilarious news, yes, that is exactly what it is. I couldn’t find a standard gymnastics wedge anywhere in Canada! Then I saw a movie where George Clooney and Tilda Swinton are having an affair and they fight or something and he storms out of the bedroom afterwards with his wedge mat. So I took my search to adult sources online!

When it arrived at the UPS depot the giant sticker on the box proclaimed ADULT BLACK LIBERATOR, NO CUFFS, GEARBAG INCLUDED. Terrific. Lol…

Thanks re: dropbacks!

Oh God, that's the funniest thing ever! Good for you! I wish my props came with labels indicating NO CUFFS. I mean, what's a prop if you can't potentially add some cuffs to it?

LOL - I should have gotten the cuffs...I'm sure I could have rigged them up for supta vajrasana or something like that!

I went to several adult stores too...I would describe what I wanted, say it was for yoga and they were like "suuuuuure".

It was completely worth the mortification though - I love it! :-)

Congrats! I've just re-acquainted myself with standing from UD too, but yours is much much nicer!

I want a wedge, too, but my husband already thinks my yoga thing is out of hand. He might just be convinced by a liberator though....

The Liberator is now famous! ha ha ha!!!

I've read many of your posts- I'm sorry I haven't commented. I've really enjoyed them. I'll start writing when I read, okay?

Thanks for the videos, they're fun.
(seriously, is the sex wedge cover made with black velvet?)

Hi Lew - you should get one, I am really happy with mine. Standing from UD was such a nice surprise!

Hi Liz - I am a longtime lurker of your blog! I think it is microfiber but looks/feels like velvet, seriously! So comfy...

Thanks for visiting and commenting you guys :-)

thought you might want to know that the site allegromedical has a black one with blindfold included. didn't one teacher recommend practicing yoga blindfolded? pictures included.

Blindfolded and earplugs as well. It's on you tube search John Scott blindfolded.

Allegromedical, that is hilarious!

I think I've seen that John Scott video. Grimmly I am recalling a straight-leg jumpthrough blindfolded you did that was pretty incredible.
